Malta and Gozo
Car hire for Gozo, made easy
Take your hire car across on the ferry and see the quieter island your own way, from the Ġgantija temples to the cliffs at Ta' Ċenċ. One car, one booking, both islands.
Gozo rewards having your own wheels more than anywhere else in the country. The buses exist, but the places that make the island special, the salt pans beyond Marsalforn, Wied il-Għasri's slit of a swimming inlet, the inland villages around Għarb, sit away from the routes. With a car you cover them all in a day and still make the sunset ferry.
The logistics are refreshingly simple. Drive your hire car to Ċirkewwa at Malta's northern tip, join the vehicle lane, and buy nothing: the crossing to Mġarr is charged only when you come back. On board you leave the car below deck and take the stairs up for the views of Comino on the way over.
Because our cars come with unlimited km, a Gozo day (or three) costs you nothing extra in mileage, and the comprehensive insurance rides across with you. Planning an itinerary? Our Gozo day trip guide maps a realistic loop with parking notes at every stop.
Good to know
Taking the car to Gozo
-
One car, both islands
Your hire car is welcome on the Gozo ferry, so there is no second rental to organise at Mġarr harbour. Drive on at Ċirkewwa, sail about 25 minutes, drive off. The fare is charged only on the return crossing, so heading over needs no ticket at all.
-
Queues and timing
Ferries run roughly every 45 minutes for most of the day, more often in summer. The car queue at Ċirkewwa builds mid-morning in peak season; sailing before 9am or after 4pm usually means driving almost straight on.
-
Fuel and roads on Gozo
Gozo has fewer fuel stations than Malta and many close early, so cross with half a tank or more. The roads are quieter than Malta’s, with some rough patches around the coastal tracks: nothing a normal car cannot handle at a sensible pace.
-
Parking over there
Victoria has a large free car park below the citadel, and most beaches (Ramla, Marsalforn, Xlendi) have free white-line parking that fills by late morning in summer. Go early for the red sand at Ramla; it is worth it.
