A perfect Gozo day trip by hire car

Gozo is the day trip everyone recommends and most people under-plan. Done well, it is the best day of a Malta holiday: emptier roads, greener valleys, and a coastline that makes you pull over every ten minutes. Here is a loop that actually fits in a day, with the parking sorted in advance.

Getting there: the ferry is the easy part

Drive your hire car to Ċirkewwa, at Malta’s northern tip, and join the vehicle queue. There is nothing to book and nothing to pay on the way out; the fare is collected only on the return crossing. Sailings run roughly every 45 minutes, the crossing takes about 25, and you stretch your legs on the upper deck while Comino slides past.

In summer, aim for a ferry before 9am. You will drive almost straight on, and you buy yourself the quiet morning hours on the other side.

Morning: Victoria and the Citadel

From Mġarr harbour, head up the spine of the island to Victoria (about 15 minutes). Park in the large free car park below the Citadel, then walk up. The views from the ramparts reach every village on Gozo, and the lanes inside the walls are at their best before the mid-morning coaches arrive. Grab a pastizz and a coffee in Independence Square on the way down.

Midday: Dwejra and the west

A 15-minute drive west brings you to Dwejra, home of the Inland Sea, the great cliff arcs, and the ghost of the Azure Window. There is a generous free car park by the water. If the boats are running, the ride out through the tunnel to the open sea is worth every cent; if not, the shoreline walk is free and just as dramatic. On the way back, detour through Għarb and San Lawrenz, two of the prettiest village cores on the islands: slow driving, in the good sense.

Afternoon: swim at Ramla or Marsalforn

Cross the island to Ramla Bay for Gozo’s famous red-gold sand. The road down the valley ends in a free sandy car park that fills by late morning in July and August, which is another argument for the early ferry. Prefer a promenade and an ice cream? Marsalforn on the north coast has easy white-line parking away from the front and calm swimming off the rocks.

Evening: an easy run home

Ferries run into the night, so there is no cliffhanger ending. Allow 20 minutes to reach Mġarr from anywhere on Gozo, pay the return fare at the booth, and roll on. Keep half a tank or more for the day: Gozo’s fuel stations are fewer and close earlier than Malta’s, and while every road on this route suits a normal small car, the coastal tracks reward an unhurried pace.

Why the hire car makes this day

Every stop on this loop is awkward by bus and effortless by car, and with unlimited km on every hire, the whole day costs you the ferry fare and an ice cream. We deliver the car free to your hotel or the airport, you pay on delivery with no credit card needed, and the ferry queue does not care what is under the bonnet, only that you got there early.
